WMU Men's Basketball Jump Ball Titus Wright

WMU men’s basketball fell to Toledo, 70-59, in its first contest of 2021 to fall to 1-2 in the MAC and 2-6 overall.

WMU started out well, holding a 21-18 lead with seven minutes left in the first half, but a 10-0 run by Toledo turned the tide and the Rockets never looked back. At halftime, Toledo held a 39-27 lead.

Toledo gained that first half lead by outshooting the Broncos, making 15 of 36 shots compared to WMU shooting 9-27. The Broncos hurt their cause as they missed their last nine shots from the field before the break.

The Broncos were able to trim the lead to single digits a few times in the second half, and had the deficit at 50-42 with 10 minutes to play, but could never quite get within striking distance of the Rockets.

WMU outshot Toledo in the second half, knocking down 45.2% of their shots compared to 34.5% for the Rockets. However, Toledo hit four three-point shots to two for the Broncos to go along with seven free throws to WMU’s two.

B.Artis White led the Broncos with 17 points, while Greg Lee led the Broncos in rebounds with 15 and assists with four, to go along with 11 points. Patrick Emilien provided a spark on defense with two blocks and two steals, and scored nine of the Broncos’ 14 points off the bench.

Ryan Rollins scored a game-high 20 points for the Rockets as Toledo moved to 3-0 in MAC play.

The Broncos take the floor next on Tuesday at Ball State. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m.
