Western Michigan volleyball not only won every game they played this past weekend, but also had a sweep of all of the weekly player awards. With the winners of the Mid- American Conference West division Offensive, Defensive and Setter players of the week coming from the Bronco volleyball team.
Junior Rachel Bontrager earned the offensive player of the week after winning the tournament MVP at the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational. Over the weekend, Bontrager had a total of 52 kills with seven service aces and 33 digs. Bontrager is now 93 kills away from joining the 1,000 kill club at Western Michigan.
The defensive player of the week went to senior Kathleen Reilly. Leading the team with 60 digs, helped her earn all-tournament team honors. The Bronco defense held opponents to a stifling .200 attack percentage over the weekend.
The MAC setter of the week was split by two players this week, junior Mary Marzo and freshman Rose Duffy. The pair combined for 140 assists with Duffy having 88 and Marzo with 52.
Duffy earned her first career double-double in the game against Purdue Fort Wayne with 40 assists and 10 digs. She then followed that performance up with another double-double against Northern Kentucky by putting up 32 assists and 13 digs.
Marzo played her first career game for the Broncos this past weekend and started on the right foot by having a double-double against South Alabama with 16 assists and 10 digs. Marzo then followed up her first game performance with another double-double in the championship game against Northern Kentucky with 20 assists and 11 digs.
Western Michigan will look to keep the hot start going Sept. 6-7 when they play Montana State, Loyola Maryland and Loyola Chicago in the Rambler Challenge in Chicago.
