Western Michigan finished its season just short, losing in three sets to Miami (OH) (18-25, 22-25 and 13-25). The Broncos complete the year .500, with an overall record of 14-14, and a Mid-American Conference record of 5-11, just missing out on a postseason conference tournament berth.
Even though WMU came up short in the game, Rachel Bontrager ended her season on a high note just missing out on a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs, ending the season with 414 kills. On the assist front, two Broncos were in double digits, with junior Mary Marzo contributing 14 and freshman Rose Duffy helping with 12.
On the defensive side of the court, senior Kathleen Reilly ended her last game as a Bronco with 15 digs, moving her to 2,326 digs on her career, good for third all-time on the Bronco digs list. Redshirt sophomore Janell Williams continued her stellar blocking performance, having three blocks moving her season total to 112.
For the Redhawks, junior Avarie Powell led the team with nine kills and four digs. With more contribution from fellow junior Morgan Seaman helping with 21 assists. On the other side of the net, junior Abigail Huser had 15 digs and sophomore Gaby Houser had five blocks.
The Broncos had a hot start to the season winning their first eight games before simmering down. Western will graduate four seniors during the offseason and return much of its key contributors for next season.
