Western Michigan men's soccer was defeated by SIU Edwardsville 2-1 in its Mid-American Conference opener Sunday.
SIUE scored the first goal early on as Jacob Bilyeu scored at 7:54 in the first half. The goal was assisted by Kelby Phillips.
SIUE’s second goal came at 29:03 when Oskar Lens put his shot in the back of the net. Phillips got the assist on the second goal as well.
WMU had opportunities in the first half but could not capitalize, taking 8 shots but was unable to score to cut into the lead.
Western Michigan finally got on the board with a goal by Daniel Nimick at 71:31. The Broncos could not get a second goal in the final 20 minutes to tie the game and fell just short of the comeback.
Western Michigan had the advantage in shots with 13 compared to six for the Cougars. The gap in shots was not good enough for the Broncos as WMU failed to turn its chances into goals.
Western Michigan will be back in action Wednesday to face Spring Arbor at 4 p.m. on the road.
