Ricci named to the John Mackey Award watch list

Ricci had a career best season last year with 392 yards and three touchdowns.

Western Michigan senior tight end Giovanni Ricci has been named to the 2019 John Mackey Award preseason watch list.

The award is given annually to college football’s top tight end. The award recipient is selected by the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2019 recipient will be announced on Dec. 11. The award will then be presented on Dec. 12 at the Home Depot College Football Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.

For Ricci, 2018 was his most productive year yet. He was named Third Team All-MAC last season after hauling in 35 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns. He also helped block for a rushing attack that ranked 33rd in the nation last season.

Ricci is also a preseason First Team All-MAC selection heading into the 2019 season. He is expected to play a key role in the Broncos offense this season, and could see an increase in targets in the passing game.

Western Michigan opens the season on Aug. 31 against Monmouth University at Waldo Stadium.
