Western Michigan women’s tennis lost a tight battle with Toledo on Senior Day, falling 4-3 to bring the Broncos’ record on the season to 14-7 (6-7 MAC).
In doubles play, WMU’s No. 1 duo of Femke Tjon-A-Joe and Taylor Smith fell 6-1, but Lindsey Zieglar and Maya Perkucin won 6-3 at No. 2 to even things up. Ana Guadiana and Kaitlyn Rogosch earned a 6-3 win at No. 3 to secure the doubles point for the Broncos.
Tjon-A-Joe continued her struggles on the day with a 0-6, 4-6 loss at No. 1 singles as the Rockets pulled even with WMU. Zieglar won, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 for WMU to regain the lead, and a 6-2, 6-3 win by Perkucin at No. 6 put the Broncos one point from victory. It was a point WMU would fail to get.
At No. 4, Rogosch fell, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, and Karin Hamilton dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 match at No. 5 to make the contest come down to one final match at No. 3. Guadiana was outbattled by Julia Kuszynski of Toledo, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, and the Rockets secured the victory.
The Broncos will look to end the year with a .500 winning percentage in MAC play when Western Michigan travels to Northern Illinois Sunday for the season finale. The match is set to start at 2 p.m.
