Western Michigan junior defensemen Michael Joyaux has been named the NCHC Bauer Defenseman of the Week after the Broncos split its series this past weekend with No. 4 ranked St. Cloud St.
The Broncos started out the series on a rough note being defeated 5-1 on Friday against St. Cloud St. However, WMU would rebound on Saturday night, winning the series finale 5-4 in overtime. In the finale, Joyaux scored three goals, becoming the first defensemen in NCHC history to earn a hat trick.
Joyaux’s first goal was to tie the game up for the Broncos at 1-1 about halfway through the period. With 12:54 seconds left in the second period, he scored again to give WMU a 3-2 over St. Cloud St. The goal that cemented Joyaux in history was the goal he scored to tie the game up 4-4 with 18 seconds left to force an overtime period.
Joyaux shot the puck six times and WMU was +2 with him on the ice. Joyaux now has four goals on the season, which is a new career high.
