Two goals by captain Mike Melaragni and a shutout in net from Isaac Walker led Western Michigan men’s soccer to its first win of the season against Butler.
This was the Broncos’ first game in 416 days and a great all-around performance gave Western Michigan a conference victory in their season opener.
The first goal came at 16:49 when Melaragni scored on a shot assisted by Daniel Nimick. The second goal came at 35:31 when Melaragni earned his second goal of the game, assisted by Charlie Sharp and Pepe Martinez-Bertrand.
After the second goal, the Bronco defense and goaltending took over and held on to the two-goal lead for the rest of the game for a statement win after such a long layoff.
Butler had more shots (10-7), but both teams had the same amount of shots on goal with four each.
The Broncos will be back on the field Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. when WMU squares off with DePaul at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Ind.
