WMU Women's Basketball Leighah-Amori Wool

WMU forward Leighah-Amori Wool splits two Ohio defenders in the Broncos 84-75 loss to the Bobcats in the MAC Tournament at Rocket Mortgage FiledHouse in Cleveland, Ohio.

In an announcement on Thursday, the Mid-American Conference has decided to cancel its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments due to COVID-19 concerns.

The news comes days after it was announced the tournament would be played with only essential staff and media in attendance.

The MAC joins a growing list of conferences cancelling their conference tournaments, including every power five conference, Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Pac-12. As well as numerous smaller conferences.

Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher announced in a press conference the reasoning of the cancellation.

“We have seen a number of conferences make the decision to cancel, we have come to the same conclusion and are cancelling the event.” Steinbrecher said.

If the NCAA Tournament does take place Steinbrecher said Akron, the MAC regular season champion, would represent the conference in the men's tournament and Central Michigan would represent the conference in the women's.

Currently, the NCAA Tournament is scheduled to be held with no fans in attendance with other options now being discussed by NCAA officials.
