WMU Football Sean Tyler

Sean Tyler avoids a tackle during his 100-yard kick return touchdown.

Western Michigan running back Sean Tyler was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List on Wednesday morning.

The Doak Walker award is given out once a year to the nation’s top running back, and Tyler hopes to ride last year’s breakout season and become college football’s best. He exploded last year for 1,150 yards on 178 attempts while punching in nine touchdowns. He also had career highs in the passing game, with 14 receptions for 114 yards and two scores. Tyler was also the Broncos top returner in 2021, averaging 29.3 yards per return and taking two to the end zone, including a 100-yard house call on Western’s opening kick return against Nevada in the Quick Lane Bowl.

Tyler was recently named to the Maxell Award Watch List for the nation’s top player as well. A great challenge and opportunity awaits Tyler in week one when he’ll face last year’s number 15 ranked run defense and Michigan State.
