In a statement posted to Western Michigan University’s website on June 4, the university said it investigated accusations that an incoming student posted racist comments on social media and found the posts to be fake.
The Dean of Students, Director of Admissions, local law enforcement and other university officials were involved in the investigation. The university explained how they talked to the student and her parents and determined the posts were fake.
“We’ve concluded that the incoming student's Facebook account was hacked, and the Snapchat account was faked. She did not make the posts, and they do not reflect her views. She was targeted by hackers in an attack designed to escalate unrest at a time when we are all seeking healing, peace and action that ends systemic racism,” The statement read.
