WMU receives grant following an executive order by President Trump:
Researchers from Western Michigan University and the Michigan Geological Survey will be assessing Michigan’s supply minerals considered essential to the nation after receiving a grant from the U.S. Geological Survey.
The grant comes following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump calling for a strategy to ensure a secure supply of critical minerals. The president called for an assessment of the nation's natural mineral potential due to the ongoing trade war with China, one of the largest mineral exporters.
The project as funded by the grant consists of cataloging the geological information and data kept at the Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education. In doing so, researchers hope to create a clearer picture of the state's natural resources.
