Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts in the death of George Floyd Tuesday, April 20. The jury found Chauvin guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Western Michigan University President Edward Montgomery said the verdict reminded him of a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quote in an email to the WMU community. The quote read: "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
The email said progress is not inevitable, but requires engagement, participation and commitment.
“As we continue our work to eradicate systemic racism in our community, we must all recommit ourselves to creating a community where all are welcome, everywhere, at all times,” the email read.
It was added the community must do their part to continually elevate respect and human dignity towards justice.
