Asylum Lake Preserve was subject to prescribed burns April 2. See photos as the 274-acre parcel of land owned by Western Michigan University burned.

Professional fire crews burned 14 acres of prairie as well as 4.5 acres of land on the southeast shores of the lake when weather conditions allowed. The intentionally set fires were carefully managed and have proved to stimulate native plant growth, increase biodiversity and manage invasive species in prairie ecosystems.
