A text message sent out at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday threatening to “shoot up Western” was aimed at Western International High School in Southwest Detroit and not Western Michigan University, according to Western Michigan University Department of Public Safety Chief Scott Merlo.
The message told students to not come to school on Tuesday “unless you want your brains on a dry erase board.” The threat has been confirmed to be connected to the high school by local authorities and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Merlo said.
DPS had received multiple calls and emails from members of the campus community concerned about the text which had gathered attention on social media on Monday, Merlo said.
“That’s exactly what we want our community to do,” Merlo said. “If you see anything suspicious, whether it’s out in the public or on social media, forward it to us (DPS) and give us a call.”
