Kathy Beauregard and Steve Hawkins inside University Arena to watch WMU women's basketball's senior day game.

Western Michigan Director of Athletics Kathy Beauregard released a statement Wednesday announcing longtime head basketball coach Steve Hawkins will not return for the 2020-21 season.

"We appreciate all the contributions he and his family have made to our university and the Kalamazoo community," Beauregard said. "Ultimately I've decided to make a change in the leadership of the men's basketball program. Our search for a new head coach will begin immediately."

Leaving with a 291-262 all time record, Hawkins has been at WMU for the past 20 seasons, spending 17 seasons as head coach. The winner of eight MAC West titles, WMU reached the NCAA tournament twice (2004, 2014) under Hawkins tenure.
