What’s leaving Netflix in the New Year

The new year brings a new landscape to streaming services like Netflix.

The coming of the New Year means a fresh start for everyone, even streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.

Every New Year, licenses on films and TV series go up for renewal or trading among streaming services so that many students inevitably find themselves scrambling to fit in all the seasons of their favorite shows before they are taken off of Netflix.

This year, similar to 2019 when Netflix announced “Friends” was leaving their service for HBO Max, subscribers were hit hard with the loss of two other significant TV series: “The Office” and “Gossip Girl," which are leaving for Peacock and HBO Max respectively.

CW reported 1.5 million people tuned in for the “Gossip Girl” season finale, and the number of viewers have remained high while streaming on Netflix.

In 2019, Nielsen reported 45.8 billion minutes watched of “The Office” on Netflix over a 12-month period, making it one of Netflix’s most watched shows.

Some big-name movies are also leaving come January. These movies include all of the “Indiana Jones” and “Back to the Future” films among others.
