Fred Upton breaks party lines, votes to block transgender military ban:
The House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to block the Trump administration's ban on transgender service members. The 243-183 vote was largely made along party lines with 9 Republicans breaking ranks and voting to block the ban. Among those nine was Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan's 6th Congressional District which is based out of Kalamazoo and covers the southwestern part of the state.
Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan's 3rd District also voted to block the ban. Amash left the Republican party earlier this month and has since identified as an independent.
WMU Professor to run for Mayor of Kalamazoo:
David Benac, an associate professor of history at WMU has launched a campaign for Kalamazoo mayor. Benac previously ran for Michigan's 6th Congressional District but was defeated in the Democratic primary by Matt Longjohn. Further coverage of his campaign is forthcoming.
WMU women’s soccer coach terminated:
As of Friday afternoon, Sarah Stanczyk, the head coach of the Western Michigan women’s soccer team was relieved from her coaching and administrative duties.
The full text of the press release reads:
“Western Michigan women’s soccer head coach Sarah Stanczyk has been relieved from her coaching and administrative duties effective immediately, the Western Michigan Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced on Friday.”
No further information surrounding her termination is known at this point.
