Take a break, have a drink

As you read this, I’m on my way to sunny Florida to forget about my hectic life at Western by relaxing near the ocean. My Grandma, who is playing hostess for the week, has already baked my favorite cookies (molasses) and stocked up on Diet Coke to prepare for my visit. When we’re not reading the latest Danielle Steel books or shopping at the local Jewish thrift stores, we’ll be sitting in the driveway enjoying happy hour with our family and the neighbors.
Here is a selection of tropical drinks to try over spring break if you’re on the beach or stuck in the snow.

Banana Barbados
¾ oz. Mount Gay Eclipse
¾ oz. Myer’s rum
½ oz. crème de banane
1 large splash sour mix
2 scoops vanilla ice cream

Blend the ingredients and pour the mixture into a hurricane glass. Float a dash of Myers’s on top.

Beachcomber
1 ½ oz. rum
½ oz. triple sec
½ oz. lime juice

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Blue Sky Martini

½ oz. Skyy vodka
¼ oz. blue curacao

Shake the ingredients with ice and serve on the rocks. Alternatively, strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Caribbean Berry

½ oz. Myers’s rm
¼ oz. coconut rum
¼ oz. Midori
¼ oz. peach schnapps
¼ oz. cranberry juice

Shake the ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail, pony or rocks glass.

Coral Reef

1 ½ oz. vodka
2 oz. Malibu
6 strawberries or 1 tablespoon strawberry preserves
crushed ice

Blend the ingredients with ice until smooth. Serve in a chilled wine goblet.

Key Largo

¾ oz. Campari
¼ oz. triple sec
1 splash grapefruit juice
1 splash club soda

Blend the Campari, triple sec and grapefruit juice in a highball glass. Finish with a splash of soda.

Yellow Parrot

¾ oz. apricot brandy
¾ oz. anisette
¾ oz. yellow Chartreuse

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass.
