Spring break fashion that won’t break the bank
Nobody can afford a new wardrobe with the current economic situation, but it’s always nice to buy something new for an upcoming trip. This time of year the key is to buy pieces you’ll use even after spring break, like a cute dress or a bright bag. Save room in your suitcase to bring home all the fun new pieces you’ll find shopping while on vacation.
Bikini
Every authentic spring breaker needs a flashy bikini, and Old Navy offers high quality swim pieces for super reasonable prices. Styles include underwire bra tops, eyelet tankinis and seersucker bikini bottoms. Try on a variety of styles to see what best flatters your body.
BUY: Halter bikini top and hipster bottom in pink paisley, $16.50 each at www.oldnavy.com.
Walking Shoes
Flip-flops are the ultimate summer shoe, but if you plan on walking all day look for something a little more supportive. Lace-up sneakers may be too hot, so look for a pair that slips on easily and can be worn without socks, perfect for a quick dash into the ocean. Keds has started making stylish, comfortable shoes in recent years, and you can even design and order a custom pair on their Web site.
BUY: Rave Mary Jane houndstooth, on sale for $19.95 at www.keds.com.
Sundress
A good sundress can go from day to night, and double as a beach cover-up and a casual dinner ensemble. Look for a cotton and spandex blend to cut drying time and prevent wrinkles. Wear over your swimsuit on the way to the ocean and throw on a sweater at the end of the day to walk the boardwalk.
BUY: Contrast tribal print dress, $22.80 at www.forever21.com.
Sunglasses
A good pair of sunglasses should look stylish and offer protection from the sun. Look for a pair with 100 percent UV protection to reduce eye damage, and avoid trendy details like rhinestones. Buy a pair without nose pads to comfortably perch the glasses atop your head while inside.
BUY: Xhilaration® Mega Modified Oval Sunglasses, $12.99 at www.target.com.
Beach bag
A sturdy canvas bag will tote a full load, including iPod speakers, the latest issue of Vogue, an oversized beach towel and a giant bottle of SPF 15 sunscreen. Long handles will fit over your shoulder to make carrying easier. Look for washable fabric and inside zippered pockets to hold keys, money and a cell phone.
BUY: Polka-Dot Boat and Tote® Bag, $30 at www.llbean.com.
