Rave the last dance

Before heading to a warmer climate for spring break, heat up the dance floor this Saturday at the Strutt (formerly Dino’s Coffee Lounge) for the WIDR Week Dance Party.
This is the final event of WIDR Week, the annual designated fundraising week for Western Michigan University’s radio station, 89.1FM WIDR. Other WIDR Week events included film screenings, live music, and a bowling night.

“It’s gonna be an awesome time. It’s the last event for WIDR week ’09, so we’re hoping to get a big turn out,” said Dave Emmert, who’s in charge of WIDR promotions.

The dance party will feature the musical styling’s of WIDR DJ’s Bat Guano,
Richard Bowser,
Brad Miller,
Useless Eater,
 Napoleon Solo,
and Dirty Dub.

“There will be a mix of music, obviously a lot of it will be up tempo, stuff you can dance to … but it’s going to fit within the genre of stuff that WIDR plays, maybe some more obscure artists that kind of fit in with the WIDR way of thinking. Some of our best-known DJ’s are going to be there, so they’re all experienced and they know what they’re doing,” Emmert said.

The Strutt is a bar, coffee shop and entertainment venue all tied into one fantastic building that offers the perfect setting for this event. The bar offers an assortment of local micro-brews, such as seasonal favorites from Bell’s Brewery as well as classics like Guinness, cocktails for of-age partiers and plenty of non-alcoholic options for the under-age. The Strutt also houses an easy-going, eclectic atmosphere at an incredibly convenient location.

“We’ve never hosted a WIDR event before, it should be a blast,” Strutt owner and manager Darren Bain said.

“We’re happy to be working with the Strutt for this event … [it] has a great location, it’s close to campus and it’s close to the big student population on the other side of Stadium. Also, it’s a local business that we haven’t utilized before, and WIDR is all about helping out community and local business,” Emmert said.

This event is not just for students, but open to the entire community. It is a low-cost way to get out and have some fun while supporting a local radio station.

“I support WIDR week and what they’re doing, I haven’t made a donation yet probably because I’ve donated to a couple of other causes already this year and my donation funds are running a little low … I’ll be at the WIDR Week Dance party,” said Chris Broadbent, Kalamazoo County YMCA youth and family program coordinator.

Seize the opportunity to celebrate the end of midterms and kick off your spring break with what is sure to be an exhilarating end to WIDR Week 2009.
The dance party starts at 8 p.m. Saturday night, is 18+, and has a $5 cover. All proceeds will benefit WIDR, the home for radio evolution.
