For the Western Michigan University women’s tennis team, this weekend’s ITA Regional Championships were just as they expected: extremely challenging.

The five team members who traveled to Northwestern University finished with four combined wins, all coming in singles action, as they faced off with some of the midwest region’s best players.

Freshman Maggie Remynse had the most notable run of the tournament, winning two straight singles matchups to advance to the third round of the qualifying draw. However, she lost to fourth-seeded Gabby Steele of Ohio State University in the draw semifinals. Remynse made a second set comeback after dropping the first, but lost the final set (1-6, 6-1, 4-6).

Yumi Matsuto and Jill Pastunink picked up the other two wins, also in the qualifying draw. Matsuto nearly swept Cleveland State University’s Nicole Janck (6-0, 6-1) and Pastunink defeated Illinois State University’s Aniko Kiss in a three-set shootout (6-1, 5-7, 7-6(4)).

Senior Emily Dudzik was WMU’s lone singles main draw competitor. Dudzik faced Amy Recht of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, but lost in straight sets (4-6, 4-6).

The Broncos will host the WMU Super Challenge from Nov. 6-Nov. 8, which will serve as the final event of the 2009 fall season.
