(Chyn Wey Lee/Western Herald) Western Michigan University forward Anina Cicerone crosses the ball over to an open teammate during a scoreless match against Northern Illinois University Thursday afternoon.
It was apparent just how badly the Western Michigan University women’s soccer team wanted to finish its season with a win.
However, that win never came for them.
The Bronco defense played a key role in keeping Northern Illinois University at bay. At the end of the first half, the score was tied at 0-0 with the Huskies having attempted five shots.
During the second half, tensions ran high as neither team could manage to score. Northern Illinois forward Kelsey Passaglia had an open shot on goal during the ninth minute of the half, but Bronco keeper Sarah Phillips was able to make the save.
The end of the second half resulted in yet another 0-0 tie and the first overtime began. Stephanie Skowneski, a WMU forward, had a few shots but was unsuccessful in capturing a goal. At the end of the ten minute period, the score remained 0-0.
After a very aggressive second overtime, the Broncos had to settle for a tie with the Huskies. Now that regular season play is over, they will head into the MAC tournament next week.
Several games this past season have resulted in a tie and/or overtime. In the upcoming MAC playoffs, the lady Broncos are going to need to be physically prepared.
“It’s going to be really important for us to take tomorrow and Saturday and really focus on recovery and making sure that these girls are ready physically and also mentally for what’s in store for us Sunday,” head coach Suzie Grech said.
The Broncos are headed into MAC tournament play with a 3-4-4 record. They will face Central Michigan University this Sunday at 2 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant.
