(Chyn Wey Lee/Western Herald) Western Michigan University freshman Maggie Remynse returns the ball to Indiana University’s Leslie Hureau during Sunday morning's WMU Super Challenge Tournament.
For the Western Michigan University women’s tennis team, there’s nothing like capping off a challenging two-month fall season with a meet right in its own backyard.
The Broncos hosted the WMU Super Challenge from Friday to Sunday, with players from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, University of Illinois, University of Louisville, Iowa State University, and DePaul University making appearances.
The Brown and Gold ended up with 11 combined wins, four coming by way of doubles matches and seven from singles.
“This was a very tough end to a tough fall season. We were seeing a lot of teams that have been in the NCAA tournament,” head coach Betsy Kuhle said. “I told my team that I’m not going to measure our success in wins and losses right now as much as improvement. It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish.”
The WMU Super Challenge wrapped up an ambitious fall season that had featured a generous amount of Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference and Big East Conference teams, Kuhle said.
Doubles staple Yumi Matsuto was sidelined with the flu, but Emily Dudzik and Jill Pastunink’s pairing was able to compensate for the loss, defeating opponents from DePaul and Notre Dame.
Freshman Maggie Remynse also picked up two doubles wins, pairing with Amanda Moccia in a win over DePaul’s Gia McKnight and Cali Gustafson (8-6). Remynse then teamed up with April Kerr to knock off Illinois’ Kristina Minor and Christine Stromberg (9-7). Remynse raked in the most wins for the Broncos, tallying four overall.
“I didn’t start [the season] well, so being able to finish stronger is definitely a lot better,” Remynse said. “These are big name schools, so these matches will give me a better perspective on other teams.”
Remynse’s wins, in addition to the team’s success thus far, will provide a boost as they transition into spring.
“As a team, we’ve gradually improved the whole [fall] season, so it makes us feel a lot better going into the regular season,” Remynse said.
The Broncos notched most of their singles victories against Louisville, with whom they won five of their seven matchups.
The other two singles wins came against Iowa State’s Erin Karonis, who Remynse defeated 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (7), and against Indiana’s Katva Zapadalova, who was bested by Amanda Moccia in a come-from-behind win (2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5)).
