The Western Michigan University women’s tennis team will be hosting the Fall Mid-American Conference Invitational.

The Broncos are considered one of the favorites out of the eight MAC schools that they will be competing in the Invitational. Western Michigan is hoping to come out on top, as head coach Betsy Khule is looking to win each flight this weekend.

“It is a long time until the end of April, and our goal is to come out on top and be a MAC champion,” Kuhle said.

As the Brown and Gold continue the fall segment of their schedule, they are particularly focusing on the team building work for the next four to five weeks of outdoor tennis they have left.

For right now, they are strategizing for the team, not individually. They will begin individual work following the Vanderbilt Invitational on Oct. 17, which is the final tournament of the fall season.

“We are trying to get each player to play a certain way, because we have a certain way that we want them to play,” Kuhle said. “Each player is working on either being a defense player or an offense player, and basically everybody is working on being the best player that she can be.

The players on the team have already noticed improvements early on in the season.

“We are improving every week more and more, and have built up a lot more confidence to show them,” freshman Jenny Nalepa said.

“We have been working hard and it’ll pay off in the end,” freshman Rachel Denny said.

The freshmen will play an important part in this weekend’s tournament. Each newcomer is building her resume for match play and working hard to show the teammates they can compete with the rest of the group.

This weekend’s tournament has nine flights of singles and fours flights of doubles play. There will be eight players in each flight and eight schools, including WMU.
