It’s not often that any team from any school gets to face an opponent that is ranked No. 1 in the nation, especially in one of their hosted events.
In the case of Western Michigan women’s tennis team, that opponent is Northwestern University, and the arena is the 2009 Wildcat Invitational.
“It’s going to be tough,” sophomore April Kerr said. “It’s going to be a good experience though. Playing those high-quality players – it will be exciting.”
Kerr, who had surgery on loose shoulder ligaments in March, is recovering on schedule with a physician’s six to eight-month projection. However, Kerr will continue to use an underarm serve for the time being, she said.
The Wildcat Invitational will feature players from several other big name schools as well, including DePaul, Michigan State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Wisconsin, in addition to host Northwestern.
“There are probably 10 nationally-ranked teams there,” head coach Betsy Kuhle said. “The only other Mid-American Conference team there is Akron, who is a very good team.”
This weekend’s Wildcat Invitational will feature four Broncos: Rachel Denny, April Kerr, Maria Nivia, and Maggie Remynse.
The other half of the team will be heading to the ITA Midwest Regionals in Ann Arbor, which begin Oct. 22.
