Women’s soccer suffers unexpected loss
The University at Buffalo Bulls women’s soccer team was 1-10-1 entering Friday night. Not anymore.
The Bulls hadn’t scored a goal in its last three contests, but the Western Michigan University women’s soccer team fell 2-1 Friday night in Buffalo.
The lost came against a team in the cellar of the Mid-American Conference standings. In the closing run of the season, this is a game the Lady Broncos couldn’t afford to lose. The team drops to 5-6-1 on the season and faces a team with the same record on the road Sunday.
The Bulls jumped on the Broncos in the four minute mark of the contest, and again taking a 2-0 lead at the 15-minute mark. The Broncos couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Sophomore forward Stephanie Skowneski netted her third goal of the season in the 59th minute. Freshman forward Megan Matula assisted Skowneski on the play.
The Broncos outshot the Bulls 11-4 on goal, but couldn’t manage a second score to tie the contest.
WMU must regroup quickly as they travel to face the Kent State University Golden Flashes (5-6-1) on Sunday, before coming home next week to face the top two teams in the MAC next weekend.
