For the second year in a row, Western Michigan University has been selected to host the 2010 National Campus Championship Series (NCCS) Regional Basketball Championships.
Region III includes teams from Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin and Ontario, Canada.
The event will be held from Feb. 19-21 at the Student Recreation Center and will feature several men’s and women’s intramural and club basketball teams from the region.
“It feels good to be chosen but it feels really good to be chosen two years in a row,” University Recreation Director Amy Seth said. “It’s a great thing for the community, as well as the university. It puts us on the map for being able to host events like this.”
The tournament provides a chance for college students to organize and compete in a higher level of competition, Seth added.
“Not everyone is going to play Division I ball,” she said. “We have a ton of student athletes who are either going to go intramural or they’re going to go club. We can accommodate both of those in this tournament.”
The event also presents a unique opportunity for Western Michigan students to get hands-on experience off of the court, even if their majors do not involve sports.
“It gives our student an opportunity to apply their education in helping us run and organize the event,” Seth said. “We’ve pulled business students, recreation students and athletic training students and given them the chance to be part of a committee.”
