Away from the snow and ice, the Western Michigan University men’s basketball team is enjoying a beautiful winter break in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In their first game in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, the Broncos fell short to the USC Trojans, 55-51.

Leading the way for the Broncos was senior forward Martelle McLemore with 21 points, six rebounds and one steal. McLemore, who is averaging 12 points per game this season, had 12 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal against Kennesaw State on Saturday.

Senior guard David Kool finished with 11 points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal. On Monday, Kool was named the Mid-American Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, marking his ninth career award.

Freshman standout Nate Hutcheson also had a strong performance with nine points, two rebounds and one block. Hutcheson shot a career best 13 points against the Owls on Saturday and brought down four boards.

The Brown and Gold return to play on Wednesday when they face Northeastern.
