WMU football to play Notre Dame in 2010

Western Michigan University and the University of Notre Dame will face each other in 2010, both schools announced Thursday.

The Broncos and Fighting Irish will meet at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind. on Oct. 16, 2010.  On that date, the Brown and Gold were originally slated to face Virginia Tech University, but that game will now be rescheduled to the 2016 season.

The deal came about when Notre Dame had an open date on its 2010 schedule and WMU was able to strike to deal with Virginia Tech to play in 2016 and the Broncos vs. the Golden Domers was finished, according to a press release. This matchup is also special because of the close proximity of the two schools. Notre Dame is the closest Division I Football Bowl Subdivision school to WMU with only 70 miles separating the two campuses.

Western Michigan has faced Notre Dame twice in history. The two met in 1919 and 1920 when the Irish were led by legendary head coach Knute Rockne. The Irish came out on top in both matchups.

This will also be the first time a member of the Mid-American Conference will face Notre Dame, since the MAC was created in 1947. The game will also be a nationally televised game on NBC, as Notre Dame has a contract with NBC to broadcast all of its home games.
