WMU baseball delivers a one-run victory at home over Valparaiso

The Western Michigan University baseball team defeated Valparaiso, 5-4, Tuesday afternoon at Robert J. Bobb Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Jared Kujawa slides back into first to avoid getting picked off in the bottom of the fifth. He reached base on a bunt single/Aaron Fishell Western Herald.

The WMU Broncos took an early lead when they scored two runs in the bottom of the first.  Jared Kujawa hit a single that plated both Theo Piccirilli and Vinnie Booker.

The Broncos lead didn’t last long as the Crusaders of Valparaiso scored two runs in the top of the second to tie the game.  WMU committed two errors in the inning and both Crusaders runs were unearned.  Valparaiso took the lead in the next inning when John Loeffler hit a home run over the right field wall.

WMU retook the lead in the home half of the fourth inning when Booker singled to right field to score Brandon Cable and Piccirilli’s single brought home Caleb Caton.

The Crusaders tied up the game in the top of the sixth off of a Kyle Schneider RBI sacrifice fly.

The Broncos took the lead for good in the seventh when a Hunter Prince bunt turned into a single and RBI that scored Piccirilli.

Piccirilli went 4-for-4 in the game while driving in a run and scoring two for WMU.

Casey Hall got the win for the Broncos.  He pitched 3.1 innings without giving up a hit or a run.

The win improved WMU’s record to 12-23 overall.  They will travel to Evanston, Ill. on Wednesday to take on Northwestern University.
