Western Michigan University’s Kristine Garbarino was named the Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week on Tuesday for the first honor of her career.
Garbarino helped led the Brown and Gold to a strong showing in a quad meet at Michigan State University on Friday and two days later in a dual meet against Ball State. The victory over Ball State was the first MAC victory for the Lady Broncos since Feb. 24, 2008 and Garbarino’s all-around total points of 38.775 are the highest by a Mid-American Conference gymnast this season.
At Michigan State, Garbarino posted a top score in three of four events she competed in: vault (9.650), bars (9.725) and floor (9.825). Adding another 9.575 from the beam, Garbarino’s grand total of 38.775 landed her in third place behind Penn State University’s Brandi Personett (39.225) and Michigan State’s Nicole Curler (39.000). Personett currently holds the title of Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and was a first-team All-American on the floor during last season.
In the home match against Ball State on Sunday, Garbarino took first place in two events, finished in the top four in all four events and also took the all-around first place with a score of 38.550.
