Western Michigan Senior Softball Pitcher Meredith Whitney won MAC pitcher of the week from April 10 to April 15.
This is the second time this season that Whitney has won the MAC pitcher of the week.
During the week WMU softball faced no.20 Michigan, Kent State and Buffalo.
Whitney in her three appearances went 2-1 with an impressive shut-out of no.20 Michigan. Whitney’s performance against Michigan in which she pitched seven innings allowing four hits, zero runs and striking out five.
It was WMU’s first shut out at Michigan since April 15, 1992.
“We were excited knowing that we could play with them and beat them,” Whitney said after the Michigan game.
In the games against Kent State, Whitney pitched eight innings of four hit ball, and only giving up two runs in an extra inning loss.
Though Whitney nabbed the loss, Whitney was able to strikeout 14 in the process, which is a career high and the ninth time in her illustrious career that she recorded double digit strikeouts.
Whitney grabbed her second win of the week against the Buffalo Bills as yet again she went seven strong innings, allowing just two hits and striking out eight.
Through the week Whitney recorded a stunning 27 strikeouts while only giving up 10 hits as well.
Not only did Whitney have the stellar pitching performances but she also produced at the plate for the Broncos as well.
As in five games over the weekend Whitney went 5-for-18 driving in two runs for the Broncos. During the five game span Whitney had a hit in four of those games.
Whitney this season is 12-9 with a solid 2.52 ERA.
She has 16 complete seven inning games and has struck out a whopping 142 batters. At the plate Whitney continues her role as a complete player as she has a .310 batting average with two home runs and 14 RBI’s.
Whitney and the Broncos hope to continue there good play until the end of the season and on to the MAC tournament.
