The Western Michigan University hockey team finished third in this weekend’s Shillelagh Tournament hosted by Notre Dame. The Broncos lost the first game in a shootout to Northeastern University 2-1, but came back the next night to win their second game 1-0 against the University of Alabama-Huntsville.
Freshman forward Kyle Novak was able to get the only score in the game against Alabama-Huntsville, putting one in the net on a power-play less than two minutes into the game. Both defenses tightened up after that score, and Huntsville was left scoreless despite having five power-play opportunities.
Western Michigan goalie Frank Slubowski recorded a partial shutout in the game, having to leave for about two minutes due to an equipment issue. Had Frank played for those two minutes and still recorded the shutout, he would have tied the all-time record at Western for career shutouts.
The Broncos will face their toughest test of the season next weekend, as the University of North Dakota comes to visit the Broncos for an NCHC series.
