The mood was energetic as the Western Michigan University volleyball team took to the floor for the first of two home games this weekend.
he first set with an aggressive mindset. WMU senior hitter Michelle Moore led the way with 12 kills and WMU freshman Jessica Brown was right behind with nine kills and three blocks. Brown has had several strong performances in her first year of collegiate play and has stepped up to take a leadership position.
“Being relaxed and just having fun, trusting my teammates and just enjoying being out there,” Brown said is how she plans on continuing her leadership role as the next five games of regular season play out.
In another leadership position for the lady Broncos is senior Caitlin Strimel. On Tuesday, she was named CVU.com’s Top Performer of the Week and also ranks first at WMU in career digs. As a libero, Strimel must remain on her toes at all times.
“I like to thrive under pressure,” Strimel said. “I’ve kinda been in that spot for awhile now so I’m used to it but again, it’s the people next to me who make me feel comfortable and I hope that I do the same for them and I think that as that grows we play better.”
Strimel finished the match with a total of 31 digs and the Broncos swept Ball State University in three sets (25-16, 25-15, 25-12).
The Broncos return to University Arena Saturday night to face the University of Toledo Rockets (5-5 Mid-American Conference) at 7 p.m. The last time the lady Broncos faced Toledo, they walked away victorious in a 3-1 ruling.
“Bettering our team and bettering our side of the court is our goal and if we can do that then we’re going to get a victory,” head coach Colleen Munson said.
