University of Ohio pounds Bronco baseball

The Broncos were physically in Athens, Ohio on Friday, but not mentally.

The University of Ohio Bobcats, who feature the worst record in the Mid-American Conference (5-22, 2-5) torched the Broncos, 25-3. The loss ties Western Michigan University for last place with the worst record in the MAC.

The game started off and looked to be a pitcher’s duel from the get-go. No runs were scored in the first two innings when the Broncos struck first in the top of the third. Grant Simotes got on board with a two-out bunt single and senior Chris Lewis drove him in with an RBI double.

It seemed that the only answer for the Broncos offensively came off the bat of either of these two players as each had three hits in the game.

Kyle Galbraith, who was moved into the five-hole and out of the leadoff spot for the first time this season, also contributed with three hits in the game. Galbraith also saw his RBI numbers go up as he knocked in two of the three in the game for WMU.

The other Broncos combined for only four hits.

Ohio answered in the bottom of the third with a run. After a scoreless fourth, the Bobcats showed no mercy on the offensive end.

The Green and White scored five runs on six hits in the fifth inning to give them a 6-1 advantage.

The sixth inning saw three different Bronco pitchers as the Bobcats knocked Bronco starter Casey Webber (1-2) after two batters. Relief pitchers John Navage and Tim Mowry didn’t see much different results and the Bobcats finished the sixth inning with seven runs and put the game away from the struggling Bronco offense at 13-1.

The top of the Bronco order scored two runs back in the seventh as Jimmy Martinez led off the inning with a single and Simotes followed with one putting two guys on for a Galbraith two-run double, making the score 13-3.

The Bobcats scored three in the seventh and piled nine unearned runs on in the ninth inning to give Ohio a gaudy 25-3 victory.

WMU looks to avenge its loss Saturday at 1 p.m.
