Track and field finds success after first day of MAC Championships

The Western Michigan University track and field team captured two Mid-American Conference titles and is sitting in third place with 29 points at the end of day one of the 2010 Indoor MAC Championships at Central Michigan University.

Western Michigan trails leaders Kent State University by six points and Miami University, in second place, by two points with the final day of competition to resume on Saturday.

Ashley Hunault earned her first MAC title of her career, winning the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 10.25 inches. The junior Bronco beat out second place Diana Dumitrescu of Kent State by 3.25 inches and was ahead of third place by over six inches.

Hunault also qualified for the final in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.63 seconds on Saturday.

The second MAC title went to senior thrower Irene Cooper. Cooper won her first career MAC title with a distance of 67 feet, two inches in the weight throw. Second place went to Akron University’s Valerie Wert, but she was still six feet behind Cooper.

Senior Jennifer Roberts scored for the Broncos in the 5,000-meter run. Roberts finished in fourth place with a time of 17:21.80, scoring five points for the Brown and Gold. She also took part in the distance medley relay team who finished in fifth place, earning another four points for the day.

Iris Campbell and Victoria Chatman both qualified for the finals in the 200-meter dash. Chatman had the third fastest time of the day with 25.09 seconds and Campbell had the eighth best time with 25.28.

Chatman also qualified for the in the 400-meter dash with a second fastest time of 56.49. She was just .06 seconds away from the top.

Freshman Cara Cremeans qualified for the 800-meter run finals with a time of 2:14.7. Teammate Rachel Whitley was right behind her in fifth place to continue competition on day two.

The final day of competition for the Lady Broncos will begin at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday with the women’s mile run.
