On Thursday, the Western Michigan University softball team swept a pair of weekly awards from the Mid-American Conference.

Sophomore Gracie Barstad took MAC West Division Player of the Week while teammate Diana Patterson swept MAC West Division Pitcher of the Week.

During Barstad’s week of competition, she recorded five multi-hit games, including four consecutive.  Barstad also had three multi-RBI games against Austin Peay State University and two against the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Quinnipiac University.

Barstad also had a pair of doubles against Austin Peay, with each coming in with a win.  She also led the Lady Broncos with a .500 batting average and a .708 slugging percentage along with a .556 on-base percentage.

Patterson made two starts and had three appearances in the past week of competition, taking her first collegiate win over Quinnipiac University and she registered a one-hit, complete-game shutout against the Bobcats.  While she was in the circle, batters hit .075 and she gave up just three hits in three appearances.

During the 2009 season, WMU picked up five MAC West weekly awards.  The Lady Broncos already have four honorees during the first month of competition in the 2010 season.

The Brown and Gold will begin its home schedule on March 18 when they host the Big East power, Notre Dame University, who is currently receiving votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association national poll.

The match-up is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
