Men’s soccer scores 5 goals in win over Wright State

When the Wright State University Raiders traveled to Kalamazoo on Monday, they brought a “come-from-behind” reputation with them. The Western Michigan University men’s soccer team didn’t let that get to them, pulling off a 5-2 win at the WMU Soccer Complex.

Earlier this month, Wright State defeated Valparaiso University by scoring three second half goals after trailing 0-2 at the half. This time, the Raiders refused to walk away without making another late push.

“Dealing with adversity is one thing we talk about in practice a lot,” WMU head coach Stu Riddle said. “We knew this team was going to battle.”

The Brown and Gold’s Tyler Rosenhagen opened the scoring for the Broncos early, knocking in a rebound from Saeed Sulemana Baba’s header in the sixth minute. Sophomore Dan Lewis then scored in the 37th minute. The goal was Lewis’ first of the season.

The team recalled Wright State’s previous comeback win at halftime and made sure they didn’t fall victim to the Raiders’ likely second half attack, Riddle said.

After Danny Mortemore knocked in a chip from the right shoulder in the 57th minute, Sulemana Baba notched a goal in the 67th minute off of a rebound from Kai Mendes’ swift shot from the left side of the pitch. Sulemana Baba had been substituted in six minutes prior to the goal, which put Western Michigan up 4-0 and served as his team-high ninth of the season.

Wright State’s first goal came in the 71st minute, when Brian Cothern nailed the top right corner of the net during a penalty kick. The muddy field aided their second goal, scored by Joe Flach on a bouncing midfield free kick in the 81st minute.

“It didn’t surprise me to see them do it,” Riddle said of the comeback attempt. “It was pleasing that we came through and scored the killer goal right at the end.”

That “killer goal” came from another Rosenhagen strike in the final minute. The shot gave him two goals on the night and four on the season.

“It was good to get everything rolling again,” Rosenhagen said. “I’m glad we got five (goals) today – it makes up a little for last week.”

The Broncos achieved heavy advantages in shots (21-8) and corner kicks (9-1). They also notched seven assists, while neither of the Raiders’ goals was assisted.

The win moved Western Michigan to 4-8-0 on the season, while Wright State fell to 2-8-1 overall. The team continues play this Saturday when they travel to Florida Atlantic University.
