The Western Michigan University men’s soccer team overpowered Concordia University in the season-opener on Wednesday, Sept. 1, with a score of 5-0.

This made for the Broncos’ highest scoring season opener since their 1992 defeat of University of Detroit Mercy, also with a score of 5-0.

The Brown and Gold started out strongly, scoring three of their goals in the first 15 minutes.

Barely nine minutes in, sophomore Shane Lyons got the Broncos’ momentum started and scored the first goal of the game with an assist by freshman Lito Esquivel and sophomore Kai Mendes.

Less than a minute later, Mendes was in the spotlight and made a goal on the right side after dribbling down the right side of the field.

At the 14 minute mark, freshman Joseph Beshara scored the third goal, assisted with a give-and-go by Esquivel.

In the second half of the game, freshman Oliver Mayer took control of the ball and scored the two remaining goals of the match at the 77th and 84th minute marks.

Mayer was assisted by sophomore Joel Del Toro and freshman Ryan Conerty and sophomore Remi Sanderford, respectively.

The Broncos controlled the field both offensively and defensively, denying the Cardinals any shots in the first half and outscoring them 30-1.

WMU will return to their home field on Friday, Sept. 10 when they host Niagara University at 4 p.m.

The Brown and Gold will turn around and host Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday, Sept. 12. The kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.

All soccer games are hosted at the WMU Soccer Complex located on Parkview Ave.

Admission is free to both WMU and non-WMU students.
