Men’s tennis looking to stay on top

With four upcoming matches, two of which are against Big 10 schools, the Bronco men’s tennis team plans on focusing on a confident mindset to help lead them to victory.

On Friday, WMU will host a double-header against Illinois State University and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, beginning at 11 a.m.

Recalling how Illinois State played well against the Broncos in a previous match, coach David Morin anticipates his team will have their hands full for the double-header.

“We’ve just got to take care of our own business and play the tennis we can play,” Morin said.

Sophomore Pablo Olivarez is confident in his team because of their strong relationship and the high energy all the players bring to matches.

“When we play singles matches, we’re all in a row, and I know when I look to my right, I’ve got a guy over there who’s going to fight all day for me, and I’m going to do the same for him,” Olivarez said.

On Sunday, WMU will face off against no. 47 Northwestern University. Defeating a ranked team like Northwestern is the way the Broncos can move up in the rankings themselves.

“I like where we stand,” Morin said. “I think the highest we ever got was 37th, and I think our guys can make a run at that.”

Junior Michael Calderone’s strategy is to stay calm and collected, while still having a good time during the upcoming matches.

“We’ve just got to come prepared, go in business-like, have fun and do what we’ve been doing,” Calderone said.

WMU will travel to Michigan State University on Wednesday for a match-up at 6 p.m.

“With the Big 10 schools we’re playing for bragging rights,” Morin said about the match against MSU. “It’s an in-state rival, so we’ve just got make sure to control our emotions and not get out of our element.”
