While half of the Western Michigan University men’s tennis team was at the All-American Championships in Oklahoma, the other half was at Northwestern University.
The four other team members were in Evanston, Ill. at the Wildcat Fall Invitational from Friday to Sunday, and adverse weather conditions didn’t make things easy on them.
The Broncos struggled in the first day of the tournament, picking up only a single win in the form a Michael Basha victory over Ball State University’s Derek Carpenter (6-3, 6-4). The Broncos dropped the three remaining singles matches and both of Friday’s doubles matches.
Basha went on to defeat the University of Toledo’s Bryant Dudzik (6-4,7-6(3)) before falling to Marquette University’s Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley in the flight semifinals.
In Flight B, freshman Simon Blomberg won four straight matches following an opener loss to win the consolation final for that flight. He defeated Northwestern’s Mark Schanerman 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 in the final match.
In doubles, a winless Friday was followed by an 8-6 consolation win from Simon Blomberg and Brad Noel over Ball State.
However, Thomas Calderone and Michael Basha could not pull off a win over their Ball State opponents.
All remaining doubles matches were canceled due to weather conditions.
As the fall season nears the halfway point, the Brown and Gold will now begin preparation for the ITA Midwest Regionals, which will be held in two weeks in Ann Arbor.
