The Western Michigan University men’s soccer team lost 2-1 on Sunday. The team hosted the Kalamazoo College Hornets for the annual Gazelle Cup game, sponsored by Kalamazoo’s Gazelle Sports.
To say the least, Broncos head coach Stu Riddle wasn’t happy about the team’s effort.
“Pitiful, disgraceful, probably the two best words to sum up the effort today, right along with diabolical,” Riddle said. “It was a big wake-up call to some of the players who were starting to think that they were better than they are.”
The Hornets outshot the Brown and Gold 5-4, and the extra shot turned out to be the deciding goal.
Bronco senior midfielder Charlie Watts scored the only WMU goal of the game at the 13:00 mark in the first half.
When the first half ended, the score, and the shots on goal were tied at one apiece. Nonetheless, Riddle wasn’t happy with his team’s urgency and let his squad know it at halftime.
“We just let them know that their effort wasn’t good enough and they had about 15 minutes to prove that they deserve to be out there playing,” Riddle said. “It obviously didn’t work, because the opposition scored three minutes into the second half.”
Those who thought they may be definite starters, may be disappointed.
“We thought we had an idea of the best 11, but after today that’s gone right out the window,” Riddle said. “We’ll be going back to the drawing board starting tonight.”
This was the last preseason contest for WMU as they’ll begin the regular season Friday in Fort Wayne, Ind. against Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.
