Men’s tennis prepares for two match ups

The Western Michigan University men’s tennis team will travel to Michigan State University on Wednesday to take on the Spartans and hopefully bring an end to their three-game losing streak.

“We need a quality win to help get us back on track,” said Bronco head coach Dave Morin.

Junior Casey Cullen also sees the match as an opportunity for the Brown and Gold to turn things around. “[Michigan] State’s a big match,” Cullen said. “We’ve lost to them for the past two years, so we’re really fired up and ready to change things around.”

The Broncos will then return to Sorenson Courts for a home match against Northern Illinois University on Friday at 3:00 p.m.

“Wednesday we’ll go compete to get confidence back as a team,” junior Michael Calderone said. “But Friday’s match will help us get our confidence back in conference [play].”

To help get themselves in the right mindset for their upcoming matches, Cullen and Calderone both have certain rituals to help get psyched up for the games.

“There’s always a lucky racquet or a song to get you motivated,” Calderone said. “Right now mine’s “Razzle Dazzle Rose” by Camera Obscura – which might surprise people.”

While Cullen also has a song of choice for this week’s matches – “I Made It,” by Kevin Rudolph – he also leads the team in their pre-match huddle.

“We all get in a circle and I start cheering and yelling and the guys yell back,” Cullen said. “It helps us get pumped up before the match.”
