Live Blog from University Arena: Western Michigan vs Toledo
It’s moments from the jump, the weather is frigid, and I broke a shovel chipping away at the icebergs attached to the wheel wells of my car. I like the Bronco’s chances tonight against a struggling Toledo team. If the Broncos can establish any kind of post presence without center Donald Lawson they’re chances to pull out a win stand to increase. The small ball they played against Central in the second half Sunday can only work for so long, eventually someone has a bad shooting night.
More after the first half, or whenever these fingers of mine get a chance to type.
16:54 So much for small ball not working, Kool is 3-3 from beyond the three point line in the first four minutes. Broncos 11 Toledo 2.
15:56 Ricks checks in for Redell, and Drews after hitting his first field goal and picking up his second personal foul is replaced by Marcus Lowe. The Broncos now almost match up in the height category with Lowe’s 6’11 frame.
15:12 A ridiculous dunk by Lowe, followed by Kool’s steal and eventual break way basket has extended the Bronco lead to 17-2.
6:51 After jumping out to a 25-2 lead (the Broncos scored 22 unanswered points) the Rockets have cut the lead to 14 after a 10-1 run. The Broncos at one pint were shooting almost 60% but are now sitting around 29% from the field.
At the half: The Broncos lead 35-21(fewest points they’ve allowed in a half all season) after jumping out 25-2. The Broncos hot hands fizzled out toward the end of the half. They finished the half 12-36 (33.3%) from the field and 5-18 (27.8%) from three-point land. However, Kool finished the half 3-4 from the field and 3-3 from three (that’s a lot of threes…). Andre Ricks added two threes for the broncos and a couple deuces.
The Bronco defense caused 9 turnovers, five of them being steals. Junior Guard Martelle Maclemore leads the team with two steals. Marcus Lowe has the only two blocks for the Broncos.
The Broncos need to keep up the front court pressure in the second half. Their 22 point run fed off Shawntes Gary and Ricks front ball pressure. David Kool’s lights out shooting helped too. Hopefully the late first half shooting woes don’t carry over into the second, and the Broncos can cruise to a 2-0 start in the MAC.
13:49 The Broncos lead 45-30 despite shooting 2-9 from the field. They’ve cause three turnovers so far increasing Toledo’s total to 12. The small hasn’t been as effective even with two three pointers, one from Drews and another from Kool. The Broncos are 4-4 from the free throw line and 10-14 on the night compared to Toledo’s 1-5.
6:26 Another big dunk by Lowe after breaking Toledo’s full court press extends the Broncos lead to 18, 59-41.
2:42 Well this one is saran wrapped and in the fridge. The Broncos have extended their lead to 23, 70-47. Look for the game wrap up tomorrow in the Herald. Keep this in mind; David Kool barely played over 20 minutes, as did Ricks. Both these guys played over 30 against Central. The young guys showed up tonight.
