The Western Michigan volleyball notched their second sweep this weekend as they defeated the University at Buffalo 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-20).
The Broncos opened up an 11-5 lead in the first set capped by a Richelle Ranney kill. WMU would extent the lead to14-7 after a Claire Gerwig kill. Buffalo was able to pull within 20-18 following a service ace from Taylor Pritchett. The Broncos answered with three straight and took the set, 25-20.
It was a similar script in the second set. The Broncos again had a big lead in the second set up 17-12. Buffalo followed with three straight points, but a Lexie Pawik kill put a quick end to the spurt. Later, a Gerwig kill gave WMU a 23-18 advantage, a Buffalo attack error forced set point, and an Alysia Banzik kill sealed the match for WMU, 25-18.
WMU continued their dominance in the third set, and went on to win the set, 25-20.
In a match were they never trailed, Alysia Banzik paced the Broncos with a match-high 14 kills while hitting .375 percent. Not to be outdone Rachel Sheffer recorded 11 kills with an impressive .423 hitting percentage, Ave Stout and Claire Gerwig notched nine kills apiece as well. Lena Oliver recorded a match-high 21 digs.
With the win Western Michigan improves to 12-9, 5-3 in the MAC. The Broncos will return to University Arena Friday October 25th to take on Kent State at 7 p.m.
