The Western Michigan University women’s basketball team (5-14, 0-6 MAC) lost their sixth-straight Mid-American Conference game on Saturday against the University of Akron (10-9, 4-2 MAC) in a 58-44 decision.
Only five Broncos scored for Western Michigan, who was held to a season-low 44 points.
In the first half of play, the Lady Broncos connected on just 4-for-23 from the field, managing only 17 percent accuracy. Despite poor shooting, the Brown and Gold managed to hang on within nine points at the end of the half.
Eager to find more shooing opportunities in the second half, sophomore guard Miame Giden moved quicker on the court, both with and without the ball. Within the second, Giden sunk in two shots beyond the three-point range, adding to her total of 14 points for the night after connecting on 5-for-16 from the floor.
For the Zips, junior forward Kara Murphy led the way with 27 points after hitting 11-for-20 from the paint. Murphy also chipped in eight rebounds and one steal.
Close behind Murphy was senior forward Jolene Tamboue who collected her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
The University of Akron managed to pull off the win by out-rebounding the Lady Broncos, pulling down 42 boards compared to the Brown and Gold’s 37. The Zips also seemed more focused on passing the ball, as the team collected 13 assists at the end of the night.
