The Western Michigan volleyball team dropped two consecutive matches after sweeping the first match at the Flyer Classic this past weekend.
Western Michigan swept the Raiders of Wright State in impressive fashion 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-13) fueled by a dominating offensive performance. The Broncos hit .323 percent as a team while holding Wright State to a .70 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Stephenee Yancy had a match high 15 kills and hit .481 percent . Junior Claire Gerwig recored nine kills and two blocks, and junior Richelle Ranney added seven kills with three blocks. Senior Lena Oliver tallied 15 digs. Junior Lewie Pawlik dished out 35 assist.
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers defeated the Broncos 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 11-25, 17-25). The Hilltoppers stymied the Broncos holding them to a .091 hitting percentage with 14.0 team blocks. In addition to good defense the Hilltoppers hit .379 percent as a team. Lindsey Spear paced Western Kentucky with 17 kills on a .625 hitting percentage.
In the loss Stephenee Yancy had a match high 18 kill, she added four blocks. Lena Oliver tallied 11 digs. Lexie Pawlik assisted 35 times.
Host Dayton Flyers ousted Western Michigan 3-1 (22-25, 22-25, 29-27, 21-25) in the tournament finale. The Broncos played the Flyers close in every set but were unable to pull this match out.
Claire Gerwig lead Western Michigan with 15 kills, while Stephenee Yancy posted 12 kills to go with a team-high six blocks. Senior Rachel Sheffer added 14 kills, nine digs, and four blocks, while Lena Oliver had a match-high 21 digs. Lexie Pawlik had her third double-double of the season with 54 assists and 17 digs.
After this weekend of play Western Michigan falls to 7-6 as they conclude non-conference season. They will return home to University Arena to kick off their conference schedule against Northern Illinois Thursday September 26th at 7p.m.
