CHARLESTON, Ill. – An eight-day gap between games can often work against a team. In the case of the Western Michigan men’s basketball team, it was just enough to get them past the Eastern Illinois University Panthers.
A career-high eight three-pointers from senior guard David Kool couldn’t have hurt either.
The Broncos (3-3) won their first road game of the season Wednesday night, besting the Panthers 69-58 in Charleston, Ill.
David Kool notched his second consecutive 30-point outing, scoring 34 on 11-of-18 shooting (4-of-4 for free throws). Kool sank eight three-pointers and single-handedly scored nearly half of the Broncos’ points.
EIU junior guard Tyler Laser, who led the Panthers (4-4) with 17 points, knocked down the team’s lone three-pointer. As a team, Eastern Illinois went 1-for-10 from long range.
Going into halftime with a five-point lead, Western Michigan kick-started the second half with a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 11. The Panthers persistently chipped away at the Broncos’ lead, but ended up getting outscored by six points on the half.
The Broncos bounced back from a sub-par rebounding performance against Temple by outrebounding Eastern Illinois 43-31.
Ten boards came from Broncos big man Donald Lawson, who has grabbed at least eight rebounds in the past five games.
The Broncos will travel to Champaign, Ill. Sunday to take on the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. The game can be viewed live at 2:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
