Hockey swept by No. 19 Nebraska-Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – The Western Michigan University (5-7-2, 1-7-2-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) hockey team had a tough break this weekend as they took on No. 19 University of Nebraska-Omaha (7-4-3, 3-4-4-2-1 CCHA) and left with two losses.
Three quick goals set the pace for the Mavericks in the first period Friday night. Sophomore forward Derek Roehl had a successful shot at 13:03 from sophomore right wing Greg Squires and junior center Max Campbell. Senior center Chris Clackson had three penalties in the first period. At 3:48 he received two for tripping and unsportsmanlike conduct. He was put in the box for roughing at 10:13, but redeemed himself in the second period with a goal at 15:38. The assist coming from freshman right wing Dane Walters and senior left wing Cam Watson.
The last goal of the evening wasn’t enough for the Brown and Gold, but senior forward Jared Katz and Squires assisted sophomore forward J.J. Crew to get one to the back of the net at 15:06. Senior goalie Riley Gill had 37 shots on goal and although UNO won 4-3, he was strong in the net.
Watson scored the first goal Saturday night at 7:23 in the second period the assist coming from Clackson and sophomore forward Ian Slater. Another successful shot was made at 13 seconds in the third period by Slater and assisted by Watson. Penalties were low for both teams and junior goalie Jerry Kuhn worked hard against 29 shots on goal. The final score was UNO 4-2.
WMU will be back at it at Lawson Ice Arena this weekend with two games against the University of Alaska.
